How do you screen candidates for positions?

Employment Counsellors and job developers screen resumes and interview applicants to identify candidates that meet the job requirements and that would be a good fit with the organizational culture.  Since we are committed to finding the right candidate for your company, we will provide support if the employee encounters challenges on the job.

What does the Employment Service Program cover?

The goal of the Employment Service program is to assist job seekers in meeting their career goals and to help employers find qualified employees.  To achieve these goals, the Tropicana Employment Centre supports candidates through pre-employment workshops, assistance with resumes and cover letters, interview coaching, job postings, job fairs and by connecting them with employers.  The Tropicana Employment Centre is able to support employers by assisting with recruitment, providing pre-screened candidates, training supports, subsidies, job trials, opportunities to participate in job fairs, as well as access to networking events. 

What do I need to participate in this program?

To be eligible to participate in the Employment Service program, employers must be licensed to operate in Ontario, comply with all applicable legislation, maintain appropriate WSIB or alternate workplace safety insurance coverage and have adequate third party general liability insurance as advised by its insurance broker, and have a full time job available (at least 35 hours/week).  All employers are required to submit a business registration form, and to successfully pass a safety check conducted by the job developer.   

Can I refer a candidate to this program?

While we are happy to receive referrals from employers, schools, community agencies, or anyone else in the community, the intention of the Employment Service program is for participants to get support in matching their skills, capabilities, interests and experience with the requirements of the employer and the position.  Since we always have a high volume of clients who are actively job searching, when positions become available, our priority is to connect them to those jobs.   If you know of someone who may be able to benefit from the services offered at the Tropicana Employment Centre , please ask them to contact us so that we can determine if our services are appropriate for them. 

What are the qualifications of your candidates?

We have clients from a wide range of industries and levels of experience. 

Do you do job trials?

Yes.  Job trials are available to provide both the employer and the candidate with an opportunity to determine if the candidate is a good fit for the job and the organization.  

What subsidies are available?

Subsidies are available to help offset the cost of training the employee.  The amount of subsidy available depends on the type of position and the barriers that the client may be facing. 

What are my obligations as an employer if I am having challenges with an employee hired through the Tropicana Employment Centre ?

We are always available for support if you are encountering challenges with an employee hired through the Tropicana Employment Centre .  The job developers and employment counsellors will provide counselling, support, and training to any client who is not meeting the requirements of the job.  While we understand that as the employer, you need to make decisions that are best for your business, we hope that you will give the Tropicana Employment Centre the opportunity to mediate the situation before you make the decision to terminate the employee.

What labour laws should I be aware of as an employer?

As an employer, it is important that you are familiar with the Employment Standards Act, which sets out the minimum standards that employers and employees must follow.  You can access the Employment Standards Act from the Ontario Ministry of Labour website.
