Still Looking for a Summer Job?

Looking for a summer job can be exciting but if it's your first time looking, you may not know where to start.  There are lots opportunities available  but you have to know what you want.  Once you have a target job in mind you can focus your resume and your job search efforts.  Here are some options to consider:

Camp Counsellor.  Many kids spend their summers in camp which means that there are a lot of opportunities available.  There are overnight camps, sports camps, hose back riding camps, city day camps, robotics camps, theatre dance camps, and anything else that you can imagine.  Find a camp that is a good match for your lifestyle, your personality and your interests.  A job as a camp counsellor will show future employers that you have strong interpersonal, leadership and probelm solving skills.

Landscaping.  Whenever you are looking for a job, you need to determine what positions are currently in demand.  In the summer, landscaping is a big business.  Many companies will be looking for staff to help with cutting lawns, tending gardens, and taking care of their property.  To be successful in this role you need to be able to work hard and to work independently, but the good news is that you'll get lots of exercise and a great tan.

Retail.  With lots of people on vacation and with people being active outside, there are also many additional retail positions available.  This can be a good time to get a foot in the door as there may be opportunities to stay on part time after the summer is over.

Internship.  If you're feeling ambitious and you would like to use your summer employment to give you a head start in your career, an internship could be a great option for you.  The provincial and federal governments offer employers in many industries incentives to hire students for the summer.  Look for these opportunities in your industry; you may be surprised by how many jobs are available.

Entrepreneurship.  There is also a lot of funding available for students who would like to try running their own business.  If entrepreneurship is something that you've been considering, this might be the perfect time to try it out.

When you are looking for a summer job the same rules apply as with any other job search: be professional, customize your application, and put some time into the process.  It's late in the season but summer isn't over yet!  Get out there and start looking!
